In a constant state of striving, to please
We forget our strengths
They are unnoticed, ignored
We hear the loud, see the bold, chase the bright shiny
We forget the strength that makes things hum
An attentive neighbor
The teacher’s patience
A caregiver’s touch
A friend’s ear
Or a family member’s commitment.
Today we celebrate the quiet kindness
Our mom, a brother, our coworker, ourselves
Most times others overshadow us
With their requirements, approval
Their wants and needs
We are lost to demands and the noise
We forget to put our masks on first
Because inside there’s a still voice
Of kindness. An inner hero.
How else could we be so brave?
To sacrifice for another?
Because the one who serves is the real leader.
Standing in the bright shadow of love and light
An example, inspiring.
The quiet strength a big heart lends
Inconspicuous. Immeasurable. Invaluable.
In a world where boundaries win
Walls aren’t the only weapons
Serving, providing, being there
Builds bridges
It is the greatest strength, our hero
It saves us, binds us, mends us.
